If you haven’t been introduced to the wild science behind positive affirmations, here’s a brief history of its inception and three reasons why we love utilizing this practice for business growth.
Psychology has acknowledged the power of positive affirmations for decades, but they’re just now starting to grab hold in the mainstream media. If you haven’t been introduced to the wild science behind positive affirmations, here’s a brief history of its inception and three reasons why we love utilizing this practice for business growth.
The History of Positive Affirmations
Okay so, a French guy named Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie (let's call him Émile, for short) first popularized this self-help method in the 1800’s under the term “optimistic autosuggestion”. Émile, a psychologist and pharmacist, first stumbled upon the power of positive affirmations after writing words of encouragement on patients’ medicine bottles.
He would write quick little love notes like,
“You will do what has to be done, nourished by the joy and happiness of being alive.”
His patients loved it, telling him how much the positive reinforcement helped to lift their spirits during time of illness. Overjoyed by the response, Émile threw on his psychologist hat and began to conduct experiments on the power of positive thought.
During a time when hypnotism was the preferred method of therapy, Émile was conducting very unpopular research, but it was worth it. He quickly found that positive affirmations can be much more successful than hypnotherapy because the individual being “treated” is physically conscious during treatment. His main takeaway? That the imagination is always stronger than the will of man. Love that.
Before passing away in 1926, Émile helped thousands of people with his positive affirmations and is now considered to be the Father of Modern Self-Help Practices. If you're an old-school psychology nerd, like me, you can find his book, Self Mastery Through Autosuggestion on Amazon.
So, what has that got to do with us?
Well, for those of us who consider entrepreneurship to be the ultimate form of personal development, quite a lot! As many business owners know, your business will never grow if you’re not ready to grow with it. Here’s what we love about using positive affirmations in business:
They Keep You Focused. Think of the saying, “the grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s green where you water it”. Consistency is always key, and by solidifying your goals with affirmations, they always stay top-of-mind!
They Build Confidence. Once you start to see results, you will really start to comprehend the immense power we all hold within ourselves. We are not our thoughts, and we hold the ability to change those thoughts for our own good. Powerful.
They Are Expansive. Positive affirmations invite you to visualize all the possibilities. You want a 6-figure business? Tell yourself it’s possible! Don’t think you have what it takes to be a boss bitch CEO? Tell yourself you already are, then step into that feeling, fully.
Try it for Yourself
If you’ve made it this far and still think I'm just some crazy, “woo-woo”, hippie business witch--first of all, you’re right—but what’s the harm of trying it out? Here are a few I'm loving right now for biz mindset:
I am Special.
I am Loved.
I am Brave.
I am Visible.
I am Needed.
My personal favorites to sit with right now are "I am Special" + "I am Loved". I'm using these specifically to help build my confidence in being seen and visible on the internet. Try thinking to yourself "I am Special" on each inhale, and with the fall of your exhale, think "I am Loved".
In my upcoming course, ‘Woke Up Like This’, we dive deeper into the power of positive affirmations and how they can even help us align our chakras. To be the first to know when this self-paced course is ready, be sure to sign up for my “news” letter.
